CONCENTIZATION PROGRAM ( 8/11/25)

 CONCENTIZATION PROGRAM

INTRODUCTION

As part of the B.Ed. curriculum, a conscientization programme was conducted during the first phase of teaching practice on 08-10-2025 to create awareness among students on socially relevant issues.

Conscientization is a process that helps learners develop a deeper understanding of the social realities that influence their lives. It encourages critical thinking, empathy, and social responsibility, enabling students to recognize their role in building a better society.

The topic selected for this programme was “Awareness of Social Services in Schools”, focusing on NSS, JRC, Scouts, and Guides. These organizations play a vital role in developing leadership qualities, discipline, social commitment, and a spirit of service among students. However, many students are unaware of their objectives and the opportunities they provide for personal and social development.

The programme was conducted for Class 9A with our team consisting of myself, Noel, Lekshmi, Akhil, and Jincy. The session included a pre-test, a PowerPoint-assisted presentation, discussions, and an interactive question-and-answer session. Through this programme, students learned about the aims, mottos, and major activities of NSS (National Service Scheme), JRC (Junior Red Cross), Scouts and Guides, and how these programmes help in community service and nation-building.

NEED AND SIGNIFICANCE

Educational institutions play a major role in shaping responsible citizens. Beyond academics, students must be exposed to activities that promote values such as cooperation, empathy, leadership, and community service. Programmes like NSS, JRC, and Scouts and Guides help instill these qualities through active participation in social and humanitarian work.

However, not all students are fully aware of the objectives, benefits, and contributions of these organizations. Many see them merely as extracurricular activities without realizing their long-term impact on personal and social growth.

Hence, this conscientization programme aimed to make students understand the importance of social service organisations functioning in schools. It helped them recognize how participation in these programmes nurtures discipline, teamwork, and civic sense, and how they contribute to the upliftment of society.

OBJECTIVES

The programme aimed to enable students to:

Understand the meaning and importance of social service activities in schools.

Become familiar with the objectives and functions of NSS, JRC, Scouts, and Guides.

Recognize the values of discipline, teamwork, and community service promoted by these organisations.

Develop interest in participating in school-based social service programmes.

Understand how such activities contribute to personal growth and national development.

Cultivate a sense of social responsibility and leadership.

REFLECTION

The conscientization programme on “Awareness of Social Services in Schools” was carefully planned and executed by our team. A pre-test with 20 items was conducted three days prior to assess students’ initial awareness. The findings helped us focus on areas requiring more explanation.

A PowerPoint presentation, along with charts, posters, and placards, was prepared to make the topic visually appealing and easy to follow for Class 9 students.

The session began with a welcome address by Lekshmi, followed by a presidential address by Noel, and the inauguration by Princy Teacher. The main presentation was jointly handled by me, Akhil, and Jincy, and the programme concluded with a vote of thanks by me.

During the presentation, we discussed the aims, mottos, symbols, and activities of NSS, JRC, and Scouts and Guides.

The National Service Scheme (NSS) encourages students to engage in community service and develop leadership and social awareness.

The Junior Red Cross (JRC) promotes health awareness, humanitarian service, and friendship.

The Scouts and Guides organisation develops discipline, courage, and teamwork through training and outdoor activities.

Students showed great enthusiasm and participated actively in discussions. The question-and-answer session at the end reflected their keen interest in joining these programmes. Many students shared their experiences of participating in school camps and social work activities.

The programme was highly successful, as students not only gained knowledge about these social service wings but also understood their value in shaping responsible citizens. The experience helped me improve my communication, organisation, and teamwork skills, and deepened my awareness of the teacher’s role in promoting social consciousness.

CONCLUSION

The conscientization programme on “Awareness of Social Services in Schools” was a meaningful and successful initiative. It helped students understand the purpose and importance of organisations like NSS, JRC, and Scouts and Guides in developing social responsibility and character. The use of visual aids, interactive discussions, and a pre-test made the session engaging and effective.

Overall, the programme achieved its objectives by creating awareness about school-based social service activities and motivating students to participate actively in them. It also highlighted the teacher’s role in guiding students towards social awareness, teamwork, and community service, thereby fostering holistic development.
